Wound care involvement
Actively promoted wound care as surgical ward also had large vascular cases.
Started assisting vascular surgeon re patient’s wound care on outpatient basis since 1996
Outpatient wound care done as needed, then twice weekly and in 2003 mornings aonly for full week,
Clinic started as own little unit off surgical ward in 2005 and
Currently clinic is run as a full week facility for all wound care patients referred to us by own staff,community and all other areas
Started wound care team in hospital in June 2004 (and only one in Company) and has had first ten members successfully pass wound care exams in November 2005
Second group of staff passed exams and clinical practise November 2008
Obtained certificate from Hertfordshire University in wound care in May 2005.
Attended Burn care academy in Durban in April 2007 and obtained certificate from International Burn association re emergency care in burns. Also completed intensive course re management of burn wounds obtaining certificate.
Currently involved in educating Link nurses re wound care
Involved in project with Life college of nursing to develop student evaluation tools in co-operation with NMMU
Life college of Learning allocated two groups of En students ( 14,16) to woundclinic for their aseptic skills and wound care training ( a first in our hospital and company)in 2008 and all passed successfully.
Assisting re wound care training and clinical advice in hospitals in PE (provincial and private)as well as for our partners of multidisciplinary team when called on.
Currently chairperson of WHASA Eastern Cape region.
